I thought my ears were playing tricks on me when I heard this. But Sergio Aguero could be set to make history in signalling he would accept a pay cut if he is to sign for Manchester City. The Eastlands outfit are understood to be ready to offer the Argentine forward a contract worth £165,000 a week – a figure short of the £6million-a-year deal he is on at Atletico Madrid after tax. It’s fairly safe to assume that no other player has ever considered taking a pay cut to join City since the club came into Sheikh Mansour’s billions.
As the likes of Wayne Bridge, Craig Bellamy, Gareth Barry, Roque Santa Cruz, Emmanuel Adebayor, Shay Given, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Edin Dzeko, James Milner, Adam Johnson, Jerome Boateng and Joleon Lescott will be aware, joining City in a multi-million deal is far from a guarantee that you will actually get to play. Call me cynical, but the wages on offer at the Etihad Stadium must have been one of the stronger, or even decisive factors in persuading many of these lads to sign for Manchester City. I was sure it was only the outgoing players at City who found themselves having to agree to pay cuts. So, hats off to Aguero I suppose. It seems money is not the only thing driving him and he does actually want to win trophies as well. Unless of course he’s done an Andrei Arshavin and is unaware of the UK tax situation..
