We saw David Haye modelling the new England away shirt as he walked out to face Wladimir Klitschko in Hamburg and thought: Not bad, quite like that. Did Umbro feel the need to compensate for producing a nice shirt by creating this monstrosity? What were they thinking? The only thing we can think of is that whoever was responsible for this abomination has still not forgiven Rob Green for his little mistake against the USA in South Africa last summer. Or perhaps they’re looking to punish Joe Hart in advance for the calamitous error he’s bound to make in a crucial match in the future; a pre-emptive revenge strike against England’s new No.1.
It’s all a bit harsh. Goalkeepers get enough stick as it is. We can’t see Ben Foster or Paul Robinson coming out of international retirement in a hurry if this is the shirt in which they’ll be forced to turn out for their country. It’s a real shame.
