In recent seasons, several teams have been accused of showing a lack of respect for domestic cup competitions. Whether it’s the top teams resting their star players for Champions League ties or managers at the bottom end of the table saving their senior squad members for crucial league matches, the FA and League cups have become less important. Once they reach the final, they do at least pretend they care about these competitions though, which is more than can be said for Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos. Following his side’s 1-0 win against arch-rivals Barcelona in last night’s Copa del Rey final, Ramos had his own Manuel Almunia moment, carelessly dropping the trophy on to the road during Madrid’s open top bus parade. The King’s Cup was subsequently crushed under the wheels of the Real Madrid bus. I doubt Jose will be handing Ramos the goalkeeper gloves in a hurry if Iker Casillas suffers an injury. The FA Cup has become less special, but I can’t see anything like this happening. Just keep an eye on Mario Balotelli though, if Manchester City beat Stoke on May 14. He may well have something like this in his locker.
