Harry Redknapp’s side have had a difficult ride to get to where they are in the Champions League tonight, and it isn’t about to get any easier. Real Madrid are tonight’s opponents, where the winner of this stage will *probably* go on to face Barcelona in the semi finals.
Having dispatched AC Milan in the previous round, without conceding a goal across both legs, Spurs will be confident against the European style of Real, however, more of a concern for the English debutantes is the lack of a defence they have at their disposal. Woodgate (surprise), King (surprise), Kaboul and Hutton are all out through injuries, the fitness of Bale is also in question, who seems to be the big thing in the Champions League, the media can’t seem to get enough of him, although personally I think there has been a huge exageration of his abilities since that Hat trick in the champions league. He is still a quality player however, and Spurs will miss him if he is not available for selection.
Real Madrid have injury worries surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo (winger/striker), Karim Benzema (striker) and Marcelo (left back) although the shock return of Argentinian star forward Higuain after his back injury could well give Jose some thinking to do about his attacking options.
Interestingly enough, Jose’s teams have not lost at home in the league in 150 games, and 9 years, well, until the weekend that is, where they were beaten by Sporting Gijon 0-1. It will be interesting to see if that has any effect on the team or the big man himself. My guess is, no.
Tonight’s game should be a cracker, it has been a while since Real Madrid have made it through to the Semi-Finals of the Champions league, but I think the wait will go on and Real may well be undone on the counter, against a very good cup side in Spurs.
