Villa and Birmingham agree McLeish compensation

It has been reported this afternoon that Birmingham City and Aston Villa have finally come to an agreement over compensation following manager Alex McLeish’s move across the second city.  In a statement the clubs announced: “Agreement has been reached between the parties, ending the legal disputes surrounding Alex McLeish’s departure.”

It is estimated that Villa have had to pay around £5m to secure McLeish’s services on a three year contract.  On joining the club McLeish admitted that there was work to be done to convince the fans that he was the right man for the job.  “I know that some of our fans have voiced concerns and I can understand why. It will be up to me to convince you that I am the right man to drive the club forward and I intend to give absolutely everything to prove that I can be a success at the club.”

Many Villa fans are still outraged that McLeish was given the job after his second relegation with the Blues in 4 seasons. Surely that would make him a Villa legend?  If Michael Jackson gets his own statue outside Craven Cottage, then surely McLeish deserves the same treatment outside Villa Park.

Birmingham now have to face up to life in the Championship, and have appointed Chris Hughton who many feel was harshly treated when sacked from Newcastle.

Who has got the better deal out of this?  Only time will tell, but if i were a Villa fan I wouldn’t be overly optimistic about the upcoming season.  I bet those who were calling for Martin O’Neill’s head just 12 months ago feel a bit silly now…
