For gameweek 17, we’re backing the wounded animal. Following their crushing stoppage time defeat to their Manchester (and title) rivals, we’d expect Manchester City to begin putting things right in the league away at Newcastle. City have won nine of their last 11 matches against the Magpies, while Alan Pardew’s side has registered just three points from their last six Premier League games. Meanwhile, surely things can’t get any worse for Arsenal. After being dumped out of the League Cup by Bradford in mid-week, the Gunners will be looking to hit back in the league and will relish the goalscoring opportunities on offer at The Madejski.
The benefits of picking Santi Cazrola (£9.5m) are obvious – the former Málaga man is both Arsenal’s top fantasy scorer as well as their most in-form player. With Vassiriki Diaby the only midfielder 100 per cent ruled out, it’s tough to predict who’ll be given the wide roles. Jack Wilshere (£6.4m)will surely be picked in the midfield trio and has to be worth considering, while we’ll also be keeping an eye on Theo Walcott’s (£8.6m) injury progress, with Arsène Wenger’s side set to play Wigan next week.
Manchester City will be looking to bounce straight back from their derby defeat to United up against a Newcastle side struggling to find any kind of Premier League form. Surely Roberto Mancini will accept he made a mistake by starting Carlos Tévez (£9.4m) on the bench last weekend and restore him to the starting line-up alongside his Argentine strike partner Sergio Agüero (£11m). It’s also worth bearing in mind that Reading visit The Etihad next weekend and have conceded no fewer than 17 goals on their travels so far this season. We also feel that selecting David Silva (£9.4m) can’t really be considered a gamble.
Others worth considering
We’ve mentioned him a couple of times recently and Sébastien Bassong is certainly racking up the points with Norwich having been in good form of late. At £5m, he’s tremendous value for money as well.
The Canaries’ opponents from last weekend are up against Spurs at White Hart Lane on Sunday afternoon. After last week’s seven-goal thriller at The Liberty, we wouldn’t be a bit surprised to see the goals fly in again in Swansea’s fixture at Tottenham. The smart money will of course be on Jermain Defoe (£8.4m) and Miguel Michu (£8m), although we also quite like the look of Clint Dempsey (£9.1m) for this one, while Wayne Routledge could prove valuable at just £5.4m.
Best of luck.
