So, who should take the England captain’s armband from John Terry? Well, of course it depends on who you ask. Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard would probably still back JT to lead the Three Lions into Euro 2012 this summer, but since the whole Fabio Capello debacle, we can safely assume that Paul Gascoigne has about as much chance as Mr Chelsea on this one. Now that Terry has been stripped of the captaincy, many a player and manager have wasted no time in coming out to publicly back their mates. A popularity contest seems like the fairest way to make this decision, after all, that’s partly how Harry’s managed to land the top job. Why not let the fans weigh in with their votes as well?
So Stewart Downing has surprised everyone and backed his Liverpool team mate Steven Gerrard to succeed JT, while Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has championed his holding midfield general Gareth Barry. Scott Scotty Parker got the vote of confidence from his team mate Brad Friedel and gaffer Harry Redknapp, while Gareth Barry and James Milner have been busy extolling the virtues of their colleague and friend Joe Hart. Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney wouldn’t mind the job but has endorsed his old mate Stevie G to lead England in the summer.
So there you have it. John Terry won’t be captain but luckily there’ll be no problem with division in the dressing room this time.
